BVNPT closes massive CE audit
Pressured by the Department of Consumer Affairs and the State Legislature, the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians has decided to rescind its massive continuing education audit. Initiated late last year, the audit, which sought the CE records of over 52,000 licensees within a four-week period, drew much criticism for being unrealistic for all practical purposes. The BVNPT attributed the scale of the audit to a mail-room error, saying the requests for records were supposed to be sent in batches, not all at once.
Normally, our licensing board conducts about 1,000 CE audits per year. With just 68 employees, the audit of 52,000 licensees overwhelmed the board’s resources. For this reason, the board will not be sending notices of the audit closure to its licensed healthcare workers, but will instead provide notice on its website.
Continuing education requirements enhance our professionalism and help us stay current on nursing, mental health issues, and developmental services so that we may better serve the individuals under our care. Psych Techs are required by law to complete 30 hours of CE within two years before the date of the license’s renewal. We are also required to retain and produce for auditing purposes original copies of our CE certificates for four years.
