CAPT supports the ‘Stop the Republican Recall’ campaign
Sacramento - August 12, 2021 - The California Association of Psychiatric Technicians:
The California Association of Psychiatric Technicians announces today its support for the “Stop the Republican Recall” campaign. The campaign to recall Gavin Newsom seeks to undermine the democratic election held two-and-a-half years ago where California voters elected Newsom by 61.9 percent share of the vote, a more significant margin of victory than any Democratic candidate for governor in state history. These divisive groups will stop at nothing to silence the majority’s will, circumventing the democratic process to advance political/policy agendas that demote the working class.
“CAPT is obligated to inform its members and fellow Psychiatric Technicians of the consequences of a successful recall,” said State President Eric Soto. “Working-class men and women, Union brothers and sisters will suffer severe consequences if the recall goes through. Those behind this effort have public employee pensions, salaries, and collective bargaining rights in their crosshairs. The hard-fought rights of the labor movement hang in the balance as Californians decide the fate of the recall.”
The Republican candidates vying to replace the governor would undermine wage guarantees and labor protections like paid sick leave. Such anti-worker rhetoric is dangerously antithetical to California’s pandemic and economic recovery. Wage guarantees are necessary to keep people gainfully employed, and sick leave benefits have never been as vital as they are today.
California has experience with recall elections and picking celebrities with no governing experience (Schwarzenegger and Trump). We need to learn from our mistakes. Unfortunately, the list of Republican candidates to replace the governor is filled with celebrities and pro-Trump politicians. CAPT will do everything in its power to ensure the state does not fall prey to people peddling the same anti-union, anti-worker, and anti-democracy agenda that we recently watched unfold across the nation.
The effort to recall Newsom was initially launched early in 2020 by people from ultra-conservative, pro-corporate groups. During the pandemic, their complaints grew to include Newsom’s limits on gatherings and business activities. The recall is funded by anti-union millionaires who want nothing more than to roll back decades of progress on workers’ rights in California. Anti-union special interests are funneling millions into the recall campaign to weaken or eliminate laws that protect our pay, health care, retirement, and safety on the job.
CAPT is the professional association for approximately 14,000 state-licensed psychiatric technicians who work in California programs serving people with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities. CAPT is also the elected union representative (BU 18) for psychiatric technicians and related professionals working in State of California facilities.
