Becoming a Psych Tech: Step-by-step guide on preparation and schools*
- Fulfill any prerequisite requirements, such as community-college-level Beginning Nursing and Anatomy.
- At age 18, apply to and be accepted at one of California's accredited Psych Tech schools. To locate an accredited Psych Tech school**, visit the DCA License search page. Under the "License Type" drop-down menu, select “Psychiatric Technician Approved Program” located under “Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians” before clicking "Search."
- Submit prerequisite verification and other required documentation, such as transcripts.
- Complete and submit clinical requirements, including physical exam, immunizations, professional-level CPR, malpractice insurance, and background check.
- Over the course of approximately 18 months, satisfactorily complete 576 hours of educational theory and 954 hours of clinical rotations during the full-time program, focusing on pharmacology, nursing science, mental disorders, and developmental disabilities.
- Graduate from an accredited Psych Tech school.
- Receive a Notice of Eligibility and Candidate Handbook from the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).
- Schedule, take and pass the BVNPT-administered licensure exam at one of several state locations (don't forget to check out the popular online practice exam).
- Apply to the BVNPT for full licensure, including a record-of-conviction form, fingerprints, and related fees.
- Take 30 hours of continuing education every two years to ensure the continuation of your license.
- Renew your license every two years; reapply early to prevent a lapse in licensure.
